Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has denied reports claiming he traveled to London for medical treatment due to congestive heart failure. He said he only decided to take time off to relax, as he hadn’t taken a holiday since his appointment.
Speaking during the flag-off of the construction of Arterial Road N1 from Wuye District to Ring Road II on Thursday in Abuja, the minister dismissed the claims as politically motivated.
“Each time I travel, I carry files and C-of-Os to ensure work is not delayed. But this time, I decided to travel without any files, so if everything falls apart, let it. One has to be alive before one can serve others.
“You know this job we do—people are waiting for you, and the day you are gone, they will announce another person. So, while working, you must also take time to rest. That’s why I traveled.
“Then I heard rumors that I was sick, that I had a heart attack. I pray those who spread such rumors never experience it. It is God who gives life, and it is God who takes it.
“This country plays politics with everything. How can someone write such things? I don’t know where they saw me or which hospital. Yet, people read it on social media,” the minister said.
Recalled that some media reports had claimed that the minister was in London last week for medical attention after being diagnosed with congestive heart failure.
The reports also said the minister declined doctors’ recommendations for bypass surgery, concerned about being away from his duties for an extended period and the risk of being replaced in his absence.
