The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has called on the contractor handling the Arterial Road S1 in Kaura District to provide jobs for unemployed youths in the area.
He made the call during the flag off of the road project on Tuesday.
Wike said world-class road networks were critical to the capital city’s readiness to host international sporting events.
“Today we are in Kaura district to flag off this very important Arterial Road S1. I hope you are aware that Nigeria is bidding to host the next Commonwealth Games. And it will be difficult for us to achieve that if we don’t have a good network of roads. When the committee comes and they see that the basic infrastructure is being provided, that gives us a leeway to be given the hosting right of the Commonwealth Games,” the minister said.
He noted that beyond international visibility, the project will also improve emergency response, particularly for the FCT Fire Service.
“By the time this road is constructed, with the three-span bridge, anywhere there is any fire incident and they are called upon, they will respond immediately. Again, this is also to contribute to the efficiency in their job delivery,” Wike added.
The minister, who assured residents of the quality of work to be delivered by the construction company, urged contractors to employ local youth from the district to create job opportunities.
He also commended security agencies and FCT Area Council chairmen for their support in keeping the territory safe and promoting development.
Highlighting other ongoing projects, Wike cited the Airport–Kuje Expressway and the dualization of the Kuje–Gwagwalada road as part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which he said would transform Abuja into a modern global city before the end of the President’s first tenure.
In her remarks, the FCT Minister of State, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, said the project was another demonstration of President Tinubu’s commitment to infrastructure renewal and improved living standards for residents.
